Pawpaw Just Wanted a Picture
The other night my family got together for a small birthday gathering for me. Nothing big, nothing fancy. Just family, laughter, and a little cake. At this stage of life, that is more than enough.
Somewhere during the evening I looked over at two of my grandsons and said, “Hey fellas, come here a minute. Pawpaw wants a picture.”
Now let me be clear. This was not some planned photo shoot. I did not have them lined up under perfect lighting. I did not tell them how to pose. I just asked them to stand there for a second while I snapped the picture.
Soon as I lifted the camera, both of them dropped their heads.
I snapped the photo.
Later on when I looked at it, something about that moment made me pause.
When you reach 65, you start looking at life through a different lens. You realize time moves quicker than it used to, and the things that matter become real clear.
Watching your grandchildren grow up will do that to you.
These young brothers are coming up in a world that moves fast. Faster than anything we could have imagined back in the day. Social media, constant pressure, everybody trying to tell them who they should be and what success is supposed to look like.
It is a lot.
But in that moment, things were quiet.
No phones.
No noise.
Just two young men standing there while their Pawpaw took a picture.
Now I do not know what was going through their minds when they dropped their heads like that. Maybe nothing at all. Maybe they were just waiting for me to hurry up so they could get back to the birthday cake.
But when I looked at that photo, I saw something bigger.
I saw the next generation.
I saw strength, youth, and possibility standing right in front of me.
And I thought to myself, this is what legacy really looks like.
Not money.
Not titles.
Not the things the world spends so much time chasing.
Legacy is standing in a room with the next generation of your family and realizing that life has kept moving forward.
Sometimes a Black Baby Boomer like me just stops for a minute and says, “Hold on… let Pawpaw take this picture.”
Because one day this moment will mean more than any of us realized.
